Toshiro Muto, CEO de Tokio 2020, confesó que los Juegos Olímpicos reprogramados para el próximo año podrían celebrarse ante “un número limitado de espectadores” debido a la pandemia del coronavirus.
“Antes de la expansión de la pandemia insistimos mucho en celebrarlos con estadios llenos, pero ahora hay una alta probabilidad de que nos veamos obligados a descartar esa idea. Aun así, no queremos que sean totalmente sin público”, agregó Muto.
El Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) y los organizadores de Tokio 2020 están haciendo todos los esfuerzos posibles para celebrar los Juegos del 23 de julio al 8 de agosto de 2021.
“Todo el mundo debería centrarse en la celebración del evento el año que viene, estamos en la misma página”, sostuvo Muto, al mismo tiempo que afirmó que “discutimos esto con Thomas Bach, presidente del COI, y dijo que no es apropiado pensar en cancelarlo o posponerlo de nuevo”.
Ante la pregunta sobre la posibilidad de que los Juegos Olímpicos se celebren sin público, Muto respondió que “Bach no está buscando ese escenario”, sino que “puede estar pensando en un número limitado de espectadores con plena consideración del distanciamiento social”.
Pensando a futuro, Muto manifestó: “Debemos construir un ambiente donde la gente se sienta segura. Es posible que los atletas y la familia del COI se sometan a pruebas antes y después de entrar a Japón y necesitamos sistemas médicos fuertes alrededor de los planes de alojamiento y transporte”.
Entre las opciones que están considerando en el Comité Organizador, Muto destacó la reducción del número de personal y delegaciones de cada país y la simplificación de las Ceremonias de Apertura y Clausura, aunque no hay planes para reducir el número de eventos o de atletas.
Asimismo, Muto se refirió a la responsabilidad que deberán tener los atletas para evitar posibles contagios: “Pensamos que podría ser necesario crear un código de conducta para los atletas”.
“Si logramos tener éxito, Tokio 2020 dejará un legado como el primer gran evento internacional que se celebre después de la pandemia. Ese es nuestro mayor deseo”, enfatizó Muto.
